Foam rolling also known, as Self-myofascial release is a fancy term for self-massage. It helps release muscle tightness or trigger points.
Trigger points are knots that form in muscles and are easily identifiable because they trigger pain. You experience a pain when pressure is applied to the area. Discomfort is felt when rolling or applying pressure to the area. The pain felt should however not be unbearable. If this is the case its important to see an expert.
It can be performed using a foam roller, lacrosse ball, or with ones hands. Using pressure on certain body parts helps in muscle recovery and returning muscles to normal function. The muscles become elastic, healthy and are ready to put be into use. Initially it was only used by professional athletes, therapists and coaches but it is now commonly being used by many individuals. It is however recommended that one consults a doctor or physical therapist before starting or when there is unbearable pain during the process.
